Of all the things that damage vehicle paintwork in Melbourne, three of the most common are also among the most underestimated: bird droppings, tree sap and road tar. Each causes a different type of damage, each requires a different approach to safe removal, and each is significantly better managed with the right protective coating in place.
Bird droppings — why they're more damaging than they look
Bird droppings are acidic — pH levels typically ranging from 3.5 to 4.5, similar to acid rain. At this acidity, uric acid in the dropping begins chemically etching into automotive clear coat within hours of contact, particularly on hot days when the panel surface temperature is elevated.
The damage pattern is distinctive — a ring-shaped etch mark where the dropping sat, often with a raised or wrinkled texture in the clear coat if left long enough. On severe cases, the damage penetrates through the clear coat to the colour layer beneath and requires respray to correct.
In Melbourne's summer, with panel temperatures exceeding 60°C on dark-coloured vehicles parked in direct sun, a dropping can cause visible etching within two to three hours.
How to remove bird droppings safely: Do not wipe dry — this drags solid particles across the paint and causes scratching. Soak the dropping with a dedicated bird dropping remover or a damp microfibre cloth for 30-60 seconds to rehydrate it, then lift gently. Rinse with clean water. If etching is already visible, the area may require machine polishing to restore the surface.
Tree sap — slow damage that sneaks up on you
Tree sap deposits on vehicle paintwork in two forms: fresh liquid sap (sticky, amber-coloured) and hardened crystallised sap (opaque, difficult to remove). Fresh sap that's addressed quickly causes minimal damage. Sap that's left to harden and bake onto the surface bonds strongly to the clear coat and causes etching similar to bird droppings when removed incorrectly.
Certain trees are particularly problematic in Melbourne suburban environments — eucalyptus trees (ubiquitous in residential streets and car parks) drop both sap and sticky resinous material that adheres strongly to paint.
How to remove tree sap safely: Fresh sap can often be removed with isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre cloth — apply, allow to soften for 30 seconds, then gently lift. Hardened sap requires a dedicated sap remover or tar and adhesive remover. Never use fingernails or abrasive materials to scrape sap — this causes deep scratching.
Road tar — the freeway commuter's constant enemy
Road tar deposits are particularly common on vehicles driven regularly on Melbourne's freeway network, including the Tullamarine Freeway, the Western Ring Road and the Eastern Freeway. Tar from road surfaces — particularly on hot days when bitumen is soft — sprays onto lower body panels, sills and wheels as droplets that cool and harden into black spots.
Tar bonds strongly to paintwork and cannot be safely removed with standard car shampoo. Attempting to rub it off dry causes scratching. Left in place, tar attracts additional contamination and eventually bonds so strongly it requires significant solvent action to shift.
How to remove road tar safely: A dedicated tar and adhesive remover (solvent-based, automotive-grade) applied to a microfibre cloth and allowed to dwell on the deposit for 60-90 seconds will dissolve most fresh tar deposits. For heavy contamination, a clay bar after solvent treatment removes residual bonded material. Wash the vehicle thoroughly after treatment.
How PPF and ceramic coating protect against these contaminants
Both Paint Protection Film and ceramic coating significantly reduce the damage caused by these common contaminants:
- PPF — the film's top coat provides a physical and chemical barrier. Bird droppings and tree sap etch into the film's surface rather than the paint beneath. Self-healing films can also recover from light etching with heat exposure. Critically, if the film is etched severely, the affected section can be replaced — the paint underneath remains unaffected.
- Ceramic coating — the hardened ceramic layer provides chemical resistance that slows the rate of etching. Contaminants also sheet off hydrophobic ceramic surfaces more readily than bare paint, reducing contact time. Regular rinsing removes fresh contamination before it bonds.
Neither PPF nor ceramic coating makes a vehicle completely immune to contamination damage — prompt removal is still the most important factor. But both significantly reduce the risk and severity of damage when contaminants do land on the surface.
The best defence — habit plus protection
The most effective approach combines protective coating with good habits:
- Remove bird droppings and tree sap within a few hours of noticing them, particularly in summer
- Avoid parking under trees where possible — especially eucalyptus and paperbark varieties common in Melbourne
- Rinse the vehicle regularly to remove fresh surface contamination before it bonds
- Include a clay bar decontamination in your annual maintenance routine to remove bonded particles standard washing doesn't lift
- Apply PPF to high-exposure areas and ceramic coating to the full exterior for the best overall protection profile
